Earlier this week, Tufts Health Plan announced that it will create a New Hampshire-based insurance company called Tufts Health Freedom Plan in a joint venture with Granite Healthcare Network (GHN). GHN is a partnership of five independent charitable organizations in New Hampshire that serve more than a third of the population in the state: Catholic Medical Center, Concord Hospital, LRGHealthcare, Southern New Hampshire Health System and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.
The joint venture is the latest example of health insurers teaming with health systems to provide population health management solutions. Last month a subsidiary of Ascension Health, the nation’s largest tax-exempt health system, announced plans for its $50 million acquisition of U.S. Health and Life Insurance Co. which is licensed in 20 states. Late last year, Anthem Blue Cross partnered with seven hospital systems in Southern California to form Anthem Blue Cross Vivity.
Tufts Health Freedom Plan, which expects to begin selling health insurance later this year, will be led by healthcare industry veteran Brian Wells, the former CEO of Memorial Hermann Health Solutions.
